Arion for Solo Marimba
The piece was written for and premiered by Jakob Mancinelli
The piece explores to the dynamic face of contemporary marimba - a wonderful virtuosic and emotional instrument full of passion and exuberance. On a personal level, the music follows a free flow of ideas and associations, challenging the rigidity of form.
The title - Arion reflects on the elementary nature of music with some hints of drama.
I was drawn by the ambiguity of its character - for some authors Arion was an ancient Greek mythical creature that took the form of a beautiful extremely swift horse.
Other sources talk about - Arion the greek poet. The legend tells how on the way to Corinth, greedy sailors tried to kill him by throwing him off the ship, but his life was saved by a dolphin, enchanted by the sounds of his song.
